I’d like to talk about the different trades involved in automotive reconditioning aka “Making Cars New Again.” There are a few main trades that are pivotal to pushing a car up to like new condition.
Paintless Dent Repair
Paintless Dent Repair is a process of removing dents from vehicles without filling or painting the panel. PDR technicians go behind the panel and slowly massage the dented area of the metal back to its original position.
Paint Repair technicians are often mobile and go to the vehicle that needs the repairs, or some companies choose to open up a permanent shop to work out of. Cosmetic Paint Repair technicians generally limit their repairs to bumpers and small spot in repairs, when a vehicle needs more extensive work it is usually takin to a traditional Body Shop.
Interior Repair technicians use special dyes and filler materials along with thread and other supplies to repair leather and cloth seats, steering wheels, dash boards plastic trim, headliners etc.
Wheel Repair Technicians use small grinders and sanders to repair scratched or scuffed painted alloy wheels and then apply paint to the area to restore it to its original condition. Most wheel technicians do cosmetic repairs only but there are shops that will repair bent or severely damaged rims as well.
Windshield Chip Repair
Windshield Chip Repair Technicians use special tools to remove air and insert resin into chips in windshields to prevent further cracking and improve the appearance of the damaged area.
Paint Touch Up
Paint Touch Up is often done by the Paint Repair technician, but there are companies that do touch ups only. There are a few different methods of doing a touch up on a vehicle.
Detail Technicians put the vehicle through a thorough cleaning process and then take it to the next level with polishing and waxing et.
Windshield Replacement Technicians generally are mobile and drive to the vehicle to remove the old damaged windshield and install a new one.
Headlight Restoration is a process of removing yellowing surfaces on headlights that make them dim and hazey and polishing them to a clear bright new finish.
De Odorizing can be done a few different ways but the most common way is with an Ozone machine, removing smells like cigarette smoke, wet dog smell etc.
Over the next several posts I will be discussing each Automotive Reconditioning Trade in more depth and detail.
